Understanding Hyperhidrosis
What is hyperhidrosis?
- Excess sweating beyond what would be expected on the feet, and not required for normal skin function.
- In some people, the body's mechanism for cooling is overactive. This can result in sweating that is 4-5 times that
which is normal. This abnormality can change one's quality of life.
- Millions of people suffer with hyperhidrosis, but because of lack of awareness and emotional disturbances it
creates, many go undiagnosed and untreated.
- Hyperhidrosis or excess sweating often begins in childhood and more often in adolescence, especially in the
feet! It has been shown that this abnormality may be inherited and many members of the same family may suffer
from this condition - but sadly many never talk about it.
Living with hyperhidrosis
- The discomfort caused by excess sweating can affect each person differently. Skin irritations are common.
Excess sweating in feet can lead to growth of plantar warts and create an environment for growth of fungus, what
is known as athlete's foot.
- One of the most devastating results of excess sweating is unbearable foot odor. The emotional and
psychological impact of hyperhidrosis takes the greatest toll on a person's life.
- Those with sweaty feet who go through an exercise, dance, or martial arts program will leave wet spots on the
floor. This can be very embarrassing, but more importantly hazardous for the individual as well as others
engaging in the activity. Falls can result due to wet spots on the floor.
- It is impossible to wear sandals with this condition. The sandals can fly off the foot easily!
- The social isolation and embarrassment caused by excessive sweating can ultimately change one's way of life.
For the Athletes
- Excessive foot sweating during an exercise, game, match, or a tournament may result in poor performance and
losing!
- When feet are too wet inside of athletic shoes, performance can be hindered due to reduced grip between the
inside shoe surface and the foot, which can ultimately result in inefficient push off at critical moments.
- The common blister that is often seen with athlete's feet, especially in runners, may be reduced if excessive
sweating can be reduced or diminished.
Treatment
- Hyperhidrosis is treated with Botox.
- The treatment is simple and may be done in the office.
